The Power of Play: Why a Playful Classroom Can Be a Powerful Place to Learn

There are plenty of things teachers are expected to take seriously.
Standards. Assessments. Lesson objectives. Student progress. Behavior. Schedules. Data.
But does learning itself always have to feel serious?
Probably not.
In fact, there is a growing body of research suggesting that adding elements of play, games, challenges, and friendly competition to learning can do more than simply make class more enjoyable. When used thoughtfully, these strategies can support student motivation, engagement, and learning.
And perhaps the best part is that creating a more playful classroom doesn't require turning every lesson into an elaborate game. Sometimes, it's simply about changing the feeling of the learning.
What Do We Mean by Gamification?
"Gamification" sounds much more complicated than it actually is. In education, gamification generally means borrowing elements that make games engaging and applying them to learning activities.
That might include:
Points
Levels
Challenges
Teams
Missions
Progress bars
Badges
Mystery elements
Friendly competition
Opportunities to "unlock" something
Immediate feedback
Game-based learning is slightly different. In that case, students are actually playing a game as part of the learning experience.
Both approaches share an important idea:
Students are active participants rather than simply recipients of information.
And research suggests that can matter.
What Does the Research Actually Say?
Gamification has been studied enough that researches can now look beyond individual classroom experiments and analyze the results of many studies together.
A 2020 meta-analysis published in Educational Psychology Review, for example, found positive effects of gamification on cognitive, motivational, and behavioral learning outcomes. Interestingly, the researchers also found that the way games are designed matters. Social interaction and combinations of cooperation and competition may be particularly useful in some situations.
Another meta-analysis published in 2023 examined 41 studies representing more than 5,000 participants. It also found an overall positive effect of gamification on student learning outcomes, while noting that factors such as the design of the activity, learning environment, and length of the experience can influence the results.
Research comparing gamification and game-based learning has found positive effects for both, although they don't necessarily work in exactly the same way. Game-based learning has shown benefits for academic achievement, while gamification can be particularly useful for motivation.
That doesn't mean adding points to a worksheet suddenly makes it a brilliant lesson. It does suggest something much more useful:
Playfulness can be a legitimate teaching tool.
Games Give Students a Reason to Try Again
One of the most interesting things about games is how differently we tend to respond to mistakes while playing them.
Get an answer wrong on a worksheet and it can feel like a failure.
Miss a question during a classroom challenge and the reaction might be:
"Wait! Give us another one!"
Games naturally create opportunities to try, receive feedback, adjust, and try again.
That cycle is remarkably compatible with learning.
Think about a student trying to beat yesterday's multiplication score, a group attempting to solve a mystery using vocabulary clues, or a class trying to remember ten objects that disappeared from the screen.
Students are retrieving information, making decisions, noticing mistakes, and trying again.
Those are real learning behaviors.
In fact, retrieval practice, (asking students to pull information back out of memory rather than simply rereading it) has strong support in classroom research. A systematic review of 50 classroom experiments found that retrieval practice consistently improved student learning across different grade levels and subjects.
Turn that retrieval practice into a quick challenge or game, and something academically useful can suddenly feel very different to students.
Play Can Change the Energy of a Lesson
Teachers already know that engagement matters. A student who is mentally participating in a lesson has a very different learning experience from a student who is simply waiting for it to end.
A playful element can create curiosity:
Can you figure this out?
Can your table solve it?
Can we beat yesterday's score?
Which answer do you think everyone else will choose?
Can you find the mistake?
What happens if we try it this way?
None of these requires an elaborate classroom game. They simply give students something to do with the information.
Research examining intrinsic motivation has found a small positive overall effect from gamified learning and has also found positive effects related to students' feelings of autonomy and connection with others.
That social element may be particularly important. Typically the best classroom games are more about everyone trying to figure something out together than about one student winning.
Not Everything Needs a Leaderboard
It's easy to hear "gamification" and immediately picture points, prizes, and a giant leaderboard. Those can work. But they aren't the only way to make learning playful, and they aren't necessarily the best choice for every group of students.
Competition motivates some children enormously. For others, it can make participation uncomfortable. Fortunately, play doesn't have to mean Student vs. Student.
It can be:
Class vs. Challenge
Student vs. Yesterday's Score
Team vs. Puzzle
Everyone vs. the Clock
Detectives vs. Mystery
That subtle shift can preserve the excitement of a game while creating a classroom atmosphere where students are rooting for one another.
Research also gives us a reason not to assume that more gamification is automatically better. A 2026 study of gamified retrieval practice found that points and progress bars increased learners' reported enjoyment, competence, and motivation - but didn't improve their later recall compared with ordinary retrieval practice.
That's a useful reminder.
The game shouldn't replace the learning. The game should create a reason to engage with the learning.
Small Ways to Make an Ordinary Lesson More Playful
This might be the encouraging part for busy teachers: you don't necessarily need new materials. Take something you're already doing and change the framing.
Instead of: "Answer these five review questions."
Try: "You have five clues. How many can your team solve?"
Instead of: "We're reviewing yesterday's vocabulary."
Try: "I'm going to give you three clues. See if you can identify the mystery word before clue number three."
Instead of: "Find the mistake in these sentences."
Try: "You are the editor. I secretly planted eight mistakes. Can you find all of them?"
A math review can become a class challenge. Vocabulary can become a guessing game. Science review can become a mystery. Reading comprehension can become detective work. Geography can become a travel challenge. Phonics practice can become a word hunt.
Sometimes, the lesson barely changes at all. Just the invitation does.
Let Students Experience Progress
Games are particularly good at making progress visible. You know when you've moved to the next level. You know when you've completed a challenge. You know when you're getting better. School doesn't always make progress quite so obvious.
A student may actually be improving tremendously at multiplication, reading fluency, spelling, or vocabulary without feeling that improvement. Playful classroom routines can help students see it.
Maybe the class could correctly identify 12 states on Monday and 17 on Friday. Maybe a student read 72 words correctly last week and 81 this week. Maybe the class remembered six vocabulary words during the first challenge and nine during the next.
The celebration doesn't need to involve a prize. Sometimes the reward is simply:
"Whoa. Look how much better we're getting at this."
A Playful Classroom Can Still Be a Purposeful Classroom
There is sometimes an unspoken assumption that a classroom is either rigorous or fun. But those things aren't opposites.
A classroom can be organized, academically challenging, standards-based, and still contain laughter, suspense, curiosity, movement, challenges, surprises, and games.
In fact, the research on gamification is probably most useful when we don't interpret it as another teaching strategy we're supposed to implement.
Instead, it offers permission to ask a simpler question:
Could this lesson feel a little more like play?
Not every lesson needs it. Not every student will respond to the same type of game. And nobody needs another complicated classroom system to maintain.
But every once in a while, changing "Complete these ten questions" into "Let's see if we can solve this" might be enough to change the energy in the room.
When students start leaning forward instead of checking the clock, something important has already happened.
Learning has their attention.

van den Broek, G. S. E., et al. (2026). “Gamified feedback in adaptive retrieval practice: Points and progress-bars enhance motivation but not learning.” Computers in Human Behavior. This is a nice source to include because it keeps the blog balanced: points and progress bars increased enjoyment, perceived competence and motivation, but did not improve delayed recall. In other words, gamification isn't magic—the underlying learning activity still matters.
